Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk This past weekend was a flurry of activity around Marlborough, but one event that drew a large crowd was the Blenheim Model Aero Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Fly-In held at Ara Vineyard. There was everything from model jets powered by gas turbine jet engines that whizzed across the field, through to helicopters that performed upside down, backwards and 3D flying manoeuvres. Members from clubs outside of Marlborough also took part, with some pitching a tent at the vineyard and staying to enjoy the weekend.

Families with children lined the edges of the field watching in awe, while others set up a picnic blanket and relaxed for the day. Club president Ken McMillan was thrilled with the huge public

turnout, especially with the number of youth. “I am ecstatic. It’s been a fantastic weekend and great to see so many young here... it’s with them that our future lies,” he says. One of club’s younger members, Tom Leonard had his first ever model out, a Delta Ray jet which he has been flying for three months.

His father Ian who was on hand to support him says the crowd turnout was great and everyone had been very supportive of Tom. Another member who attracted a lot of attention was Noel Baker with his yellow Tiger Moth De Haviland model which he was putting together for Sunday’s flight. He had owned the British model

for 10 years after getting it as a kit, and it took him two years to build it. “The real version of the Tiger Moth is based at Ohakea, is still flying and is owned by the New Zealand Air Force. Many pilots from the second World War trained in them,” he says.

By Adam Poulopoulos A rental car customer is furious after being slapped with a bill he should not have to pay. Paul Daniels was asked to pay $17.03 in refuelling charges by Apex Car Rentals Picton after his trip from Christchurch to Blenheim recently. He returned the vehicle to Blenheim Airport with a full tank and the fuel needle on full, but received an email informing him of the extra charge. When he asked to see a copy of the refuelling receipt, it showed the vehicle was filled up two and a half hours later in Picton, allegedly by Apex’s Picton Branch Manager Adam Rennick. He says he spoke to Rennick, who gave him the number for Rental Vehicle Association New Zealand president Ian Berrington. Paul says Berrington told them the $25 surcharge in the Apex hire agreement for returning a car without a full tank had been waived, so they were actually paying less than what they should be. But as Paul says the vehicle was full of petrol when dropped off at Blenheim Airport as per the contract. “Why should I pay the fuel for Apex Car Rentals to take the vehicle to Picton?” Speaking to the Sun, Rennick says

Disability, education, art and heritage for honours In last weekends Queens Birthday Honours list four Marlburians were recognised, Wendy Coutts, Pru Matthews, Rick Edmonds and Tom Parsons. Mrs Wendy Coutts; The Queen’s Service Medal - QSM For services to disability and the community. Wendy says she felt a great feeling of achievement when she first heard of her QSM award. She can’t remember how many times she has been asked to be involved in committees and also how she managed a young family at the time. “I must be a good timekeeper she chuckles.” Wendys next big project is the 80th celebrations for CCS Disability Action. Wendy is very passionate, especially about getting young people involved with groups/committees. “They are our future she says.” Wendy has contributed to CCS Disability Action in a voluntary capacity since the 1980s and has been active with Speedway New Zealand for more than 30 years. Wendy has held numerous roles within CCS Disability Action including president of the Marlborough Branch, regional chair of Nelson/ Marlborough, regional representative on the National Board for the Central Region, chair of finance of National Board, the first female president of the National Board from 2007 to 2011, and is currently a member of the Board Assets and Liabilities Working Group and a committee member for Nelson/Marlborough. She led the organisation through a major governance review in 2011. She initially joined the Blenheim Eastern States Speedway Club before being elected as a board member of

many years, having begun this work with her late husband Nevil in the 1980s. Prue has spent many hours interviewing, collating oral histories and referencing information about people and events in the region. She has co-authored the books ‘The History of the Police Force in Marlborough’, ‘The History of the Rapaura District’ and ‘The Matthews Family History’. She was a key contributor and co-editor of the Marlborough Historical Society’s magazine for four years. She was instrumental in the compilation of the Clubs of Marlborough’s 125th anniversary commemorative history book. She

has driven heritage preservation projects such as the restoration of the ex-convict ship Edwin Fox, the cob cottage at Riverlands and the White’s Bay Cable Station. She was a founder of the Blenheim Riverside Railway Society, which built a six kilometre railway link between the cities’ museums over 30 years. She contributed to the establishment of museums at Renwick, Havelock, Picton, Whites Bay and Blenheim. Prue has been a member of the Marlborough Art Society for 40 years, serving on the committee and as convenor of studio activities, and currently teaches a pastel painting class. Continued page 5.

Mr Tom Parsons has been the Principal of Queen Charlotte College in Picton since 2004 and originally from Mt Aspiring College in Wanaka. “This honour is for a lot of people particularly my wife Rosie and the team work at school,” Tom says. Over the last ten years, the roll at Queen Charlotte College has grown by 53 per cent.

He was a founding member of Havelock Theatre in 1999 and continues to

be the Society’s main playwright producing one play a year. He was the Society’s President from 2010 to 2013. He wrote and produced several plays for Queen Charlotte College and supported students in an annual regional musical competition. Rick was a co-founder and is the coordinator of the award-winning Link Pathway walk and cycle path between Picton and Havelock, which is being created partly from an early 1860s bridle path.

A positive change in how the school is viewed is attributed to Tom, his leadership style, and his ability to inspire his staff, students, and the community. He also supports other new principals in the region and is the immediate past president of the Secondary Principals’ Association of New Zealand, having been an executive member for several terms. Tom has been nominated as a representative for a number of committees and Ministerial

policy reviews, including membership of the New Zealand Teachers’ Council for Initial Teacher Education and the Cross Sector Forum on Raising Achievement. Tom is also involved with the Picton RSA Trust and the Prime Minister Education Awards, recognising excellence in education, leadership, within schools. “A really exciting concept and I feel very humble with what other schools are achieving,” he says.

Scanner has first intake By Adam Poulopoulos Wairau Hospital’s new MRI scanner is functional after it had its first patient yesterday. The first scheduled patient had their appointment at 1pm yesterday. For the next two weeks, staff will receive applications training around the new machine, before normal service begins. Four employees will work with the scanner, along with a similar number of administration staff. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board specialist services service manager Pat Davidsen says the scanner will be able to service about six patients per half-day, depending on the length of the scans. Scans can last from 20

minutes up to two hours. The scanner will service both public and private patients. Davidsen says the machine will help reduce travel time for Marlburians heading to Nelson to use its scanner, and waiting times on both sides of the Whangamoas. He uses the example of patients needing breast MRIs to illustrate the scanner’s usefulness. Previously, patients would travel to Christchurch to have the scan done. The scanner is stationed next to the hospital’s emergency services department, and was formally unveiled on Friday morning. The prefabricated box the scanner is based in was dropped into place on May 7.

I am sort of prepared but it could be better. There are a lot of things secure but we could make things more secure, and focus on strengthening the structure of the buildings.

I’ve got a kit ready with water and some cans of things. I just hope the house isn’t broken down too much so we can get into things.

I’m only new here so I haven’t really got prepared. My colleagues have told me what to put in my pack.

Average - about 80 per cent. I’ve got a pack of stuff with food, a port-a-toilet and a tent, and I’ve got spare clothes in sealed plastic containers. Hopefully they won’t get wet.

Full of cold air Dear Ed. Was sitting in reception foyer waiting for my son. I was amazed at the amount of cold air coming in when the entrance doors opened. Poor receptionists must feel frozen! Seems to me that the synchronisation of the inner and outer doors is all wrong, making a nonsense of having a vestibule? Surely the inner doors should close when the outer doors open?? Well done Tony - you’re on to it Dear Ed Congratulations to Tony Orman for his courageous letter challenging the almost pathological and universally held perception that native birds require native plants in order to breed. This is not the case. It never has been. Nectar feeders for instance, will feed from any flower for which their mouth parts are adapted, such as colourful gums, abutilons, bottle brush, grevilleas, pokers of all hues and proteas. Native pigeons love our tree lucerne flowers and are happy to join in the scrum when we feed the bantams. (I’m talking maize grains and wheat here!) And fantails will breed wherever there is enough biodiversity to produce a supply of insects. There was a useful article on biodiversity recently in the Marlborough Midweek by Clare Moore from DOC,

who unfortunately spoiled it by trotting out the obligatory DOC mantra to plant natives as if it were an absolute requirement, which it is not. Let us be clear - I am not anti native, but I hate the outcome of this oft repeated mantra. There is an assumption that more is better and too often there is no attempt to replicate the natural environment - let’s just squeeze as many natives into a space as is possible. The results are hardly bird friendly. There are few things so forlorn as the miserable straggles of native plants (which belong in the bush), planted any old how, far too closely packed together, with bits of untidy ungettabable flax poking out of them - all dusty and desiccated, along roadsides and stuffed into odd corners all over the place- with no mature trees for birds to rest in and no space for them to fly through. If we can’t do better than that

then perhaps we shouldn’t do it at all. Tuis, bell birds and native pigeons are birds of the forest. They need mature trees with plenty of sheltered flying space and branches to perch on. I have to question the sanity of people who try to lure native birds into treeless gardens only for them to be eaten by cats - and who then express outrage about cats killing native birds. Thank you Mr Orman for initiating this debate. It needed a Kiwi to do it. Perhaps we can now move on, to work out optimal plantings to encourage the birds, with plenty of mature trees (of any sort), plenty of biodiversity and appropriate plants with the right kind of flowers, which flower in succession throughout the year irrespective of whether they are natives or not. Generation of moaners Dear Ed We have two boys, one of which has done swimming lessons since six months old and is now four and a half. The boys have sometimes had blue lips when getting changed but that’s part of being cold. Once they have clothes on they warm up quick. I think we have become a generation of moaners: what one thinks is cold another

thinks is hot they will never be able to please everyone. I’ve heard people complain about the draught, the temp of the pool and the cost to get in! I just think we are so lucky to have such an awesome stadium and swimming complex that is run by some of the most amazing people. Keri Herd

Ditch the draught, keep water cool Dear Ed I totally agree that there is a horrible draught coming from all the entrances to the pool. It’s a stupid place to put a toddler’s pool. They need doors at each of the pool entrances, the ladies changing room, the mens, the family rooms etc. As for the temperature, I swim often and was a competitive swimmer here in Blenheim for 12 years when I was younger. The temperatures are fine. If the water is too warm then it’s like you are swimming in a bath and become overheated. The pool temperatures vary between pools, which is fine, and they stay the same temperature all year round. Just because it is cold outside does not mean

that the temperature of the pools should increase on the inside. I find it odd that for example, people sit in front of a fire that pumps out heat but if it was that same temperature in their house during the summer they would have all the windows open and complaining it’s too hot. For those people with medical conditions, if they want a warmer pool then they should ask to be referred to use the aqua therapy pool at the hospital. It would be good to have an aqua therapy pool like the one at the hospital available to the public. There is always the option for the ones who think it is too cold - wear a wetsuit. Alcohol issue Dear Ed In 1983 when the Wesley Centre was built, the idea behind the building was that as well as being a place of worship it was to be available for private and public functions. One of the stipulations was that at no time was alcohol to be consumed on the premises. Imagine my surprise when attending a public function recently to see a bar set up in the centre foyer dispensing wine, whether being sold or given away, I do not know.

And to make it worse, there were a large number of children present-part of the normalising of alcohol consumption. Some years ago I attended a fund-raiser ‘Boys Night Out’ music concert at the Boys’ College (very good) and the organisers apparently thought it a good idea to hand out a glass of wine to all who attended. Happiness is life’s calling How often do you say to yourself that your life is fulfilled and you have your dream career/vocation? Jane Butler says it to herself every day. Having travelled extensively in her youth, her experiences committed Jane to making sure ‘every year counts for something specific’ so her purpose is to help others find the same happiness in their lives through her business ‘Out of the Rut’. Jane sits down with reporter Celeste Lodewyk and shares her personal story. Jane welcomes me into her work area and as we settle into the comfortable chairs, Jane begins to recount her early years. “I was born in England to parents who were very unconventional. “At the age of two-and-a-half they packed my brother and I up into a Land Rover and for the next two years we traveled Europe and the Middle East. “We had cousins that owned a farm in Kenya so we stayed to look after it for a while and my mother took care of my education while my older brother went to boarding school. “From there we headed to the Belgian Congo then up across the Sahara Desert before returning home. “My father decided he wanted to farm and after moving around the decision was made to send me to boarding school. I hated it. It was like caging a lion,” she laughs. After college Jane was faced with a number of career options including occupational therapy, nursing or teaching. “Occupational therapy really appealed to me. There was something special about helping people to reach their full potential,” she smiles. After working for a period of time Jane went off traveling on her own for two years. Asked if it was challenging traveling alone, Jane shook her head. “In some ways I found it easier to be on my own. “My brother had taught me to do a decent dead leg which came in handy many times,” she laughs. Jane went on to Afghanistan where she says she spent the longest amount of time. “The people were amazing, very intelligent and hospitable. Very different to what you get now.”

She met up with an Israeli woman and the two hitch hiked the centre of Afghanistan. Her journey then took her to North West Pakistan where she hiked into the three Kalash valleys. From there Jane traveled into India then on to Nepal, Katmandu, Bangkok, Indonesia and then to Australia. There she stayed working as an occupational therapist until she had enough money to return home to England. Although Jane had ticked off much of her travel list, she had still always wanted to visit New Zealand. Eventually that opportunity arose, and it was here that her career really took off. Jane worked in the North Island as a business development manager, she opened offices for Spicers Financial Planning in Auckland and later in life when her two children were in university, she commuted back and forth to Sydney where she studied neuro-linguistic programming. All these skills and training were formulated into her business - Out of the Rut, a business coaching company. Now living in Marlborough where she has been for the past eight years, Jane is turning her attention to the personal coaching side of her business. “What I have noticed this year is the growing demand from people for the personal coaching. “People are facing many demands and pressures in their every day lives, so it’s my purpose in life to enable them to realise their potential and provide them with the tools and techniques to succeed in that. “It really has been a blessing to be part of people’s journeys. As for my future… I see more travel on the cards. There is a lot of NZ I want to see,” she smiles.

Lorraine Barrett was awarded Marlborough’s top seller, and a double diamond award for bringing $400,000 into the company, at the conference in Queenstown earlier this month. raine’s 14-year career she has been awarded the top prize. She says she was delighted to receive the awards. “It was good. It was nice. It’s something to strive for.” Lorraine says hard work is the secret behind her success. “You just keep going. “It’s 24/7 but a lot of people think it’s an easy job – it’s not particularly easy but it is gratifying.”

Wedding Countdown Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk shared a health journey story three years ago, but after the birth of her second child things... shall we say, slipped. Now she begins the countdown to her wedding next year by starting a brand new health journey. In the hope of inspiring others she will share the highlights and mishaps along the way in her fortnightly ‘Wedding Countdown’. There is nothing like an engagement ring that motivates women to lose weight more... or so the saying goes. Yes this is true, but in my case the response has been slightly delayed. I got engaged Christmas Eve 2013 at 10pm at night after finishing the present wrapping and half a bottle of wine. I was slightly sozzled when my partner of eight years got down on bended knee with a ring box. It took me a full minute to register what was happening after initially

thinking he had tripped over. But my answer was yes! The next thought that crossed my mind was “lose weight”. But then Christmas dinner came along and I over indulged, and the next Christmas dinner came along and again I over indulged. Then I checked the calendar and thought “crap”, I better get serious if I want to fit into my dream wedding dress.

The main excuse I have used for the past two years has been; “I have had two children, I work and home life is busy. It’s too hard to exercise and prepare healthy meals every day.” No more. From today I am setting out to prove to myself and to other women in my situation that a healthy lifestyle can be managed. So as I sit at my computer sipping on my smoothie made of frozen blueberries, banana, coconut water, spinach and kale to write this blog, I am committing to prove to myself that I can achieve a healthy weight loss and improve my fitness. So every fortnight I will report back with the total honest truth of my exercise, eating habits and hopefully... a lower number on the scales. Same pride after decades By Celeste Lodewyk Dave and Vicki Pook proudly stand at the helm of their business Westshore Marine Ltd, offering the same service it has for decades. The only differences now are the name, the people working behind the scenes and the huge variety of boats that come in for maintenance, repairs and repainting. The couple has enjoyed a long history with the business, previously named McManaway Marine Ltd. For Dave, August will be his 30th year. Dave first began working for the previous owners in his late teens after finishing at Queen Charlotte College, and while it wasn’t his first career choice boat building was in his blood. His father had worked in boat yards in Picton, so when the opportunity to work

for McManaway Marine Ltd came along, he took it. Years later he and Vicki became share partners in the business before taking over in 2012 and renaming it Westshore Marine Ltd. “Both Dave and I were born and bred in Picton and have grown up in this environment and near the water, so I guess it was a natural progression,” Vicki laughs. Vicki’s father too enjoyed the water and worked as a fisherman catching mostly paua and kina, and was even part of the Marlborough team that won the Ranfurly Shield in 1973. Over the years the business has welcomed a number of employees, many of whom have been there for around 10 years. “We have an awesome team of people who are are skilled and love what they do.

“They work on a huge range of boats, and even tackle non-boat related work including caravans and the odd car. “Dave has even painted a helicopter,” Vicki says. In addition to painting, Westshore Marine also specialises in haul-outs, all repairs and maintenance, alterations, boat building and extensions. Pack some headbands and hair ties. 2 • A healthy snack: Many times, babies don’t plan their arrival at a convenient hour, so having some snacks are a must. 3 • Face cleansing wipes: Facial wipes to remove makeup and dirt are so helpful, especially if you can’t get out of bed straight away. Plus, something as simple as washing your face or brushing your teeth can help you feel fresh. 4 • Chap stick and other personal care items: If your lips get dry it’s good to have a lip balm handy. 5 • A large drink bottle: Have this close to you so you can sip on water throughout the day and keep your fluids up. 6 • Camera: Those newborn photos taken in the baby’s first few hours of life are so precious.

Expo fun for the whole family It’s time! Pack the kids into the car or organise a group of friends and get along to the Parent and Child Expo this Sunday, from 10am - 2:30pm at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. The first 350 paying adults through the doors will receive a goody bag. Behind the scenes, the Marlborough Parents Centre committee has put in months of hard work to make this event even bigger and better. With new stall holders, loads more fun entertainment and activities for the kids and plenty of space for the adults to wander around the stalls it’s the place to go this weekend. What makes the Expo such a popular event each year? It promises to offer a range of information

from childcare options, financial advice, creative advice, leisure activities, plus the MPC Child Birth Education teachers are on hand to provide any answers to questions you may have. There are also plenty of opportunities for people to purchase items, whether it be for gifts or your own parenting purposes. For the kids there will be two bouncy castles, a Bunnings DIY kids area, a bungy trampoline, a story teller, a colouring competition and dance demonstrations.

Exhibitors this year have plenty to offer, from horse riding instructors, speech therapists, photographers and a number of health services. The police will also make an appearance to talk to families. Money raised from this year’s expo will go towards furthering the education courses provided by MPC as well as the ongoing costs associated with their premises in Alana Place.

The drought continues A drier, sunnier and warmer May than usual has provided little respite for farmers feeling the pressure caused by drought. During May, 20 millimetres of rain was recorded, 31 per cent of May’s long-term average. If there are less than 97.6 millimetres recorded this month, it would make the period beginning in July last year the driest 12-month span ever recorded in Blenheim. In total 214 and a half sunshine hours were recorded last month, the sunniest May since records began in 1930. The figure is 45 hours more than the average and 52 hours more than April’s result. Even though the second half of May was notable for a prolonged cold snap, the month’s mean temperature of 11.4 degrees Celsius was 0.3 degrees higher than the average. Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew says the month’s precipitation only wet the topsoil slightly. He says the longer there is no substantial rainfall to recharge soil moisture, the more likely the current drought will impact on next season.

Merino farmers tackle footrot Footrot is costing fine wool farmers $10 million a year in treatment and lost production but the problem is being tackled head-on by research and a genetic test being developed to identify more resistant sires said Dr Mark Ferguson, in an address to the recent annual general meeting of Marlborough Merino Association. Dr Ferguson is Production Science Manager with The New Zealand Merino Company (NZM). “While environmental factors play a big role in outbreaks, genetics can play a major part in the solution to footrot” says Dr. Ferguson. It was very likely that there

Short stories published By Adam Poulopoulos A lifelong Marlburian says a significant milestone in her own life was the motivation she needed to publish her book of short stories. Lois Henderson has written ‘The Punga Man and Other Stories,’ a book containing 50 short stories. She says turning 80 was the trigger to get her collection published. “If I don’t do it now I never will.” A fourth-generation Marlburian born in Havelock, Lois has always had a passion for writing.

She says she has been writing stories since she first learned how to put pen to paper, and began seriously pursuing it when she joined a writing group 10 years ago. The group requires its members to write a story every fortnight on a predetermined subject. Lois also spent the majority of her working career helping children and adults with literacy difficulties. “It’s something I really enjoy doing, the satisfaction of words I guess. I just love assembling words,” she says.

She says getting impact into a story without many words is the main challenge of short story writing. The stories in the book are on a varied range of subjects. Some are based on older people and some on animals, and Lois wrote several others for her grandchildren. Many reference Marlborough and the Marlborough Sounds. Lois also took the cover photo, a punga tree fern on the Cullen Point Lookout Track. The book is available from Still Books or Lois herself. Lois Henderson with her new book.

Webb in hill climb heaven By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim rally driver is taking a break from competition after winning the New Zealand Hillclimb Championship. Neil Webb recently took out the championship and was recognised for his achievement at the New Zealand Motorsport Awards in Wellington late last month. The championship began with two qualifying rounds in both the North and South Island, with competitors racing in their home island. The final round alternates between the islands each year, with this year’s race held in Waimate in late March. Each round included gravel and sealed hillclimbs. Webb had established

a 12-point lead over second-placed Mike Tall of Christchurch during the first two rounds, held at Denniston and Timaru in February. It was just as well, as Webb says racing at Waimate was not without its difficulties. “I had a hiccup on the second round on the gravel and I didn’t finish. I slid off the road and did a bit of damage to my car.” Webb used “cable ties and tape” to fix the damage, but when Tall broke his drive shaft, he knew he would finish top. “I was a bit worried on Saturday when I went off the road I’d put an end to my championship hopes,” Webb says. “Once I knew I’d done enough the pressure was off.”

Since the Waimate race Webb has driven the Race to the Sky at Cardrona, with more damage done to his car, a four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Mirage. The car has seen its own set of ups-and-downs since Webb purchased it 10 years ago. “A retired lady had it as a shopping basket. It was about 1600 (cc) when I got it,” he says. After a rebuild before the latest Hillclimb Championship the car is currently undergoing more maintenance. Webb hopes to be back racing for the local street sprints in September. Woodbourne Cannons triumphant Marlburians shoot Last Thursday evening Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Indoor Summer League had its finals at Stadium 2000. Having not lost a game all season the Woodbourne Cannons were favourites to win the final in Premier Grade but last Thursday the Cannons could only field 4 players for their final against Uso Fiafia. Cannons got off to a great start and got a good 5 point lead on Uso, which they never really relented and took the first set 25-22. Cannons continued their run into the second set with Jack Wheeler and Wynton Brown showing some great pancakes by diving and saving the ball from hitting the floor. Uso

put up a huge fight and placed some balls well for their points but made a few passing errors which helped give Cannons the second set win 25-21. Uso held their heads high in the third set with captain Andrew Moli playing a useful game and captaining well. Unfortunately for Uso, Cannons had a good head of steam and continued with their run. Despite nursing an injury Craig Searle made some great reflex saves for Cannons and was impressive with his setting from anywhere on the court. Cannons took the last set 25-20. In the C Grade final The Avengers were favourites having only dropped

two sets all season, although they were not underestimating their competitors, Better than You. The senior boys from QCC have improved their overall game and in particular their blocking skills so much this season but The Avengers’ experience won over youth in all three sets 25-14, 25-17 and 25-15 for a convincing win. Social grade also had their favourite to win, the Saint Clair Stars. They beat Giant Midgets in all three sets 25-11, 25-7 and 25-17. Young Maddy Croad had an excellent all round game for Saint Clair, serving, setting and getting some nice spikes in.
